Judges will be Terry Capuana and Ellen Highsmith Silver
TERRY CAPUANA
Creating art and working with craft designers have been Terry’s consuming passions and, fortunately, her life’s path has allowed her to do just that. After graduating from Marymount College, Tarrytown, NY, with a degree in art, Terry attended Pratt Institute, and then worked as a designer for Wamsutta Mills in New York—which is where her love of fiber began. Then, for 33 years, she was Crafts and Needlework Editor at Woman’s Day Magazine (the first magazine in the industry to create such a position), where she collaborated with hundreds of crafts designers every year—coordinating and guiding the direction of their work. For the next ten years, Terry was Contributing Crafts Editor at Home Magazine, visiting craft shows and studios, gathering material to produce monthly studio craft articles. Professionally, she has designed textiles, wallpaper, rugs, quilts, Christmas decorations and cross-stitch. Over the years, she has edited crafts magazines, newsletters, newspaper columns, written and contributed to craft books, served on the boards of state and national craft groups, such as American Craft Enterprises (now ACC’s American Craft Show); she has been a juror for ACC Craft Shows in Rhinebeck, NY, Baltimore, MD and San Francisco, CA and currently for Crafts On Stage for SUNY Purchase, NY.
ELLEN HIGHSMITH SILVER
Ellen cut short her career on Madison Avenue when her needlepoint kit company, Silver Threads, allowed her to immerse herself in the needlework that she knew was her calling. For many years, her original needlework concepts have been turned into artwork for book covers, kits for needlepoint, cross-stitch, embroidery, quilting and other related crafts. Ellen’s hand appliquéd quilts have been juried into national quilt shows; her pieces have received awards for design, workmanship and the highly gratifying “Viewers’ Choice” award. She was also the founder and co-author of Well Crafted, a how-to craft newspaper column. Her book, Floorquilts, introducing her newly created craft of fabric decoupage, was published in 2007. Since then, her name has been linked to this new creative way to use fabric and the decoupage technique, but her heart is permanently entwined with a deep love and respect for handcrafted textile art.
