The Newtown Hooked Rug Show is held annually in the cafetorium and front lobby of the Reed Intermediate School. For the past seven years, it has been our focus to provide rug hookers with a professionally-run venue in which to display their work, gain new information and insights and learn from each other. We invite speakers and workshop leaders who are well respected in the field and who have a genuine interest in moving this art form forward.
Rug hookers are encouraged to display their work, which we hang in the light-filled glass lobby of the Reed School. Winner in the Non-Juried Category is awarded a blue ribbon for Favorite Entry. This category is open to everyone, without charge. The Juried Category, requiring pre-registration, is awarded Juror's Choice. See Entry Form for information.
Also, we carefully assemble a group of quality vendors who make available all the tools and materials artists need to create their works. We provide shoppers with the opportunity to see endless color possibilities, examine the many fabrics available, view both patterns and custom designs and find a great selection of printed materials and related accessories. Finally, it has always been our aim to provide hooking artists with an enjoyable day, including a wonderful luncheon menu and lots of socializing.
The Annual Newtown Hooked Rug Show is sponsored by the Heritage Preservation Trust, Inc., in support of the Newtown Meeting House. The Trust is a not-for-profit organization charged with the continuing improvement and maintenance of the Meeting House. Every New England village had its meeting house but ours is the only one remaining which still sits on its original Colonial site and is used as a multi-purpose community resource. The Meeting House is available to charitable, civic and government groups and can also be reserved for cultural and social events. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information on the Newtown Meeting House, please visit our website.
In addition to funding from the Heritage Preservation Trust, Inc. the Newtown Hooked Rug Show is made possible in part from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, Brookfield Craft Center and Northwest Connecticut Convention and Visitors Bureau.
